In 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated 25 November as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. At least one of every three women worldwide has been abused, has been forced to have sex or had some type of abuse throughout their lives, usually by someone known.
